I have a chihuahua and I buy high-premium dog food for her. But I have noticed the variation in protein content. What is a good protein content for a little dog? And is a grain free dog food really the best as I have heard healthy carbs are good for your dog? Very confused!

Grain free dog food? If you can. I’d say for a Chihuahua, stay under 26% protein. Well, actually, any dog. 22%-23% wonderful.

I don’t know what the actual numbers are, but I started my 6lb Maltese off on Natural Balance and it’s been perfect for her. I tryed Evo for about a month (higher protein) and she had horrid gas. I switched her back and it was gone in a few days. Grain free has to do with allergies and Natural Balance is the best food there is dogs with allergies. It’s all-around the best food on the market. Higher protein levels for puppies are based more for large breed dogs who require more muscle tone.

Dogs don’t need any carbs, especially not rice, corn, wheat, barley, etc. If you were feeding a grain, rice and barley cause less complications.
I have a 14 lb dog and I feed EVO which is 42% protein. He has had absolutely no problems on it. Most dog food has protein in the 20% range. Unless your dog has kidney problems you do not have to worry about high protein dog food.
Good brands:
High protein:
EVO
Orijen
Wellness Core
Solid Gold Barking at the Moon
Taste of the Wild
Natures Variety Instinct
Moderate protein:
Innova
Wellness
Fromm
Canidae
Nature’s Variety Prairie
